No matter if you live in town or in the country, what you do, where you’re from, or the color of your skin, most of us want the same things: A bright future for our families and neighbors. We heard that again from members who came together for the Values and Platform Roundtable last week, and that’s what Samantha Bowen has been fighting for on the People Protecting Pierce (PPP) team the past 4 months.

Samantha and her kids got sick when their well was contaminated with nitrates from run off just down the road from the Ridge Breeze CAFO (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) operation in Salem Township. None of our families should need to go through what Samantha did: the fear for our children, the doctor’s visits, or the thousands of dollars in expenses for well digging or filtration systems just to trust a glass of water.  

Last week, we hit a setback in our fight to protect our homes and water from reckless CAFO expansion, and now we need to build more people power to win.

Under industry pressure the Pierce County Land Conservation Committee turned tail on their recommendation of a 6 to 12 month moratorium on CAFO expansions. But the fight is far from over.

The committee did approve the creation of a special Groundwater Committee to investigate water quality threats and recommend strong policy to address them, and we can’t let this Groundwater Committee get filled with Big Ag stand-ins.

This is a critical moment for western Wisconsin families and water. Together we can push back on the influence and deep pockets of Big Ag special interests, and we need our own funds to do it.
