In Dunn County, residents have gained freedom and flexibility to become small-scale Housing developers on their own properties.

On July 31st, 2024, the Dunn County Board voted unanimously to approve a new Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance Amendment for permitting Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), sometimes called “mother-in-law cottages,” across the county. Leading up to the decision, the County Board’s debate over the long-coming decision drew the attention of community leaders with GROWW working for local solutions to deliver better and more affordable housing for area residents and families. The Board’s ADU decision opens the door to more freedom or local property and home owners to build small, separate housing units on their properties, sometimes by converting a garage, carriage house, or other existing structure.
